Adjacent to the parcel to the north is the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, over 31,000 acres of saltwater bays, estuaries and brackish marshes at the mouth of the Chassahowitzka River. The refuge was established primarily to protect waterfowl and is home to 250+ species of birds, 50+ species of reptiles and amphibians, and at least 25 different species of mammals, including the endangered West Indian Manatee. A boat ramp to the Chassahowitzka is maintained by Citrus County. Access is from Zebrafinch Ave. off U.S. 19.
